In December 1953, Beauford and the rest of the citizens of Paris were experiencing one of the coldest winters on record.  According to David Leeming's biography entitled Amazing Grace: A Life of Beauford Delaney, Beauford tried to keep warm in his freezing room at the Hôtel des Ecoles by wrapping himself in a blanket. Inspired by the kinetic art of Alexander Calder and the paintings of Jackson Pollack, he took advantage of the GI bill to study at the Escuela Nacional de Pintura y Escultura in Mexico, the Art Students’ League in New York, and finally the Ecole de la Grande Chaumière in Paris.

Born in 1904, he and Beauford were the closest in age of the Delaney siblings.  Both became artists and were part of a community of artists living in NYC during the Great Depression.  Both have their works exhibited at the Knoxville Museum of Art in their hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Long Talks about Beauford - Part 1</title><summary type='text'>I was delighted to learn that Beauford's friend Richard A. Long, curator of the first retrospective of Beauford’s works that was mounted at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1978, would be visiting Paris this week. Larry Calcagno was one of Beauford’s closest friends.  They met in Paris through their mutual friend Charley Boggs. The auction of the Darthea Speyer collection at Christie's Paris took place on Wednesday, 7 July 2010.  Six Delaney paintings were among the 432 works sold.

I was fortunate enough to be able to see Beauford's works at Christie's before the auction. The photo below shows the portraits as they were displayed in the Salon Matignon IV.

It is the second largest cemetery in the Paris area, and is the most recently opened (1929). Easily reached by public transportation (metro, RER, bus), it has been Beauford’s resting place since 1979.
